Goodbye Mamba, Hello Ripper

The Funn Ripper SPD is an all-new pedal for the Funn range and comes in as a follow up to the Mamba that Rich T reviewed in our clipless pedal grouptest.

Lighter than the Mamba, even with the added moving parts that come with the AES (Angular Engagement System), by 20 grams. The Rippers are £20 cheaper than the Mambas too, at £100 on the button.

Floating cleats and short axles

Sporting a similarly short axle like the Mamba, the Ripper sports a single sealed bearing on the inboard side and a DU bush on the outboard end.

The biggest update is the floating cleat which was missing from the Mamba and was a detail that Rich picked up on in his earlier review. The cleat is Shimano SPD compatible which should make sourcing new parts pretty straightforward.

The Ripper doesn’t seem to have a huge concave but the ability to customise pins and the floating mechanism may well make up for that. The 4 removable pins allow for some tweaking of the setup and using all 4 would effectively make your shoe dip into the pedal to engage, creating a concave effect.

The axle system is pretty straightforward and has been designed with user servicing in mind. Apart from the washers, the system looks remarkably simple. Hopefully we won’t have to put this to the test, but will the lack of the grease port, not carried over from the Mamba, reduce the time between service intervals? Only time will tell.

How will these stack up against the Crank Brothers’ Mallet E that won Rich T’s top 5 clipless pedal grouptest.

Keep your eyes peeled for a full review soon. Check out full details on the new Ripper over on FunnMTB.com.
