The first race in the 2018 British National Downhill calendar happened this weekend at Cwmcarn in South Wales.
The series is brand new and replaces the much-loved British Downhill Series. After a few slow entries from the elites, the field was packed and by finals had the mini-World Cup field that we were all hoping for.
In the women’s elite field, 9 elites crossed the beam. Despite claiming some pre-race jitters Rachel Atherton came back from injury to take the win. Tahnee Seagrave went 2nd fastest, followed by Katy Curd.
- Rachel Atherton 2.47.917
2. Tahnee Seagrave 2.50.72
3. Katy Curd 2.52.788
33 elite men turned out to put in a time, with a heap of big dog factory racers. Everyone’s money was on Danny or Gee Atherton but it was Matt Walker that took the win with the only sub-2:30 time of the day. He beat team-mate Danny Hart by a solid 1.2 seconds and Mike Jones took third on his new Mondraker.
- Matt Walker 2.29.589
2. Danny Hart 2.30.878
3. Mike Jones 2.31.777
