This weekend sees Greg Williamson, Rachel Atherton and the other reigning British National Champions defend their titles at Glencoe, Scotland.
The National Championships is a one run, one chance to take the glory and win the National Champs jersey. Where the National Series title is won over 5 races, Champs gives riders just one-shot to make it count.
The race is happening THIS weekend (21/22 July) at the famously gnarly Glencoe in Scotland. The track is a 2.5ish minute onslaught of steep rocks and is a properly gnarly test of balls and bike handling.
The last straight-up downhill race that was held there was a Scottish Downhill Association event, won by Cathro. We haven’t seen a national held at Glencoe since 2012, which was won by Adam Brayton.
This weekend’s elite race could be an interesting one.
For the women, there’s a light turn out and it’s going to come down to a battle between defending champ Rachel Atherton and Katy Curd.
Rachel has won all but two of the National Champs she’s entered since since she started racing and won’t be keen to give away her Union Jack sleeve. That said, Katy is hungry, fast and Glencoe is an easy track to puncture or crash on.
For the men, there’s over 50 fast racers on the sheet with defending champ Greg Williamson being chased down by Gee Atherton, Laurie Greenland, Danny Hart, Adam Brayton and loads more.
