Where outdoor races go, unfortunately litter inevitably follows. But no longer, thanks to environmental not-for-profit Trash Free Trails. This summer they bring their free sustainable event accreditation scheme, TFT Approved, to the World Cycling Championships happening in the Glentress Forest, Scotland.

TFT Approved is a one-of-a-kind free event accreditation that supports event organisers working at every scale to reach the highest possible sustainability standards. Developed alongside notable event organisers Red Bull and Enduro Sports Organisation, the Guidelines act as a bitesize version of all the information event organisers could possibly need, cutting out the need for heavy research, instead empowering them to make the best possible decisions at pace for their event.

TFT Approved provides event organisers with not only the knowledge, but practical insights into how to better improve the environmental impact of their events.

‘We know event organisers want to reduce the amount of single-use products at their events,’ says TFT’s Programmes Manager Rich Breeden, ‘But they lack the time to do the research to find the alternatives. Through TFT Approved, we aim to have done the hard work for them, so it’s as simple as picking up the guidance and implementing the suggestions at the event planning stage.’

This year Trash Free Trails can be found in the expo field at Glentress, where they’ll be encouraging spectators to get involved to.

‘Keeping the beautiful places that host our events free of single-use pollution isn’t just a job for the event organisers’ Breeden continues, ‘It’s something attendees can help with too.’

TFT’s handy ‘Secret Shopper’ list gives attendees at the World Cycling Championships the opportunity to check out if the event is hitting the standards set in the guidance. A cross between a checklist and a treasure hunt, it’s a surefire way to fill the time between the action on race days.

Trash Free Trails will also be running their infamous ‘Trash Raffle’, alongside running surveys to support their research into nature connection, and design and drawing games for young people.
