2024 will go down as the year where women threw down in the desert at Red Bull Rampage, this is only the beginning folks.
Whilst 2024 Red Bull Rampage will be memorable for all the right reasons, this feels far greater than the sum of its parts. The hype around women competing at Rampage is palpable. Our man Daniel Seago caught the history-makers in action.
Photos by Daniel Seago. Chelsea Kimball would be one of the few riders who would risk a second run, crashing in the same place twice but still scored well. Nobody gets through Rampage on their own. This is a team effort. Everyone shares the highs and lows together. Truth. No doubt that this will be another pivotal turning point in womens’ cycling.Casey Brown ain’t scared, but the lone spectator here sure is. This is Casey in her element. Downhill speed, freeride chops. The veteran Trek star would be on the box once all the ladies had thrown down. 3rd on the day and she’d also take away the McGazza Spirit Award. Our bike check star from yesterday, Vero Sandler aboard her dig crew-customised Santa Cruz V10 is known for attending big air events and looks a little too comfortable here sending it deep whilst the windsock approves of such an action.Whistler native Georgia Astle was a hot tip for the win this weekend, and like Casey Brown is a bit of a jack of all trades. Seen here going deep off a drop the size of most semi detached houses… 2nd on the day.Vinny Armstrong has got some effortless style and is happy to let the riding do the talking. Shame there wasn’t a whip off as Vinny would likely win. Part of a very rich vein of talent here at the inaugural womens’ Red Bull Rampage. Vinny’s dig crew would take the Digger Award. Another rider who’s been there and done it all, master of all trades Vaea Verbeeck took the Trailblazer Award and rightly so. She’d bump Vero Sandler into 5th by a whisker. Seen here eyeballing a bike-length’s worth of Utah dust from a metre or five above the ground.Ladles and jellyspoons, your 2024 Red Bull Rampage winner. Kiwi Robin Goomes was first to drop at the very first women’s Rampage and held that hot seat all the way until Chelsea Kimball’s unsuccessful second run. Seen here throwing down a finish whip so good that the photographer isn’t even taking a picture of it. Goomes would also take Best Trick.A celebratory shoey for Robin goomes, assisted by Georgia Astle and Casey Brown on the first ever womens’ Red Bull Rampage podium. Major props to all the ladies who were invited to ride in the desert, and some that weren’t (#GattoForRampage), Red Bull Rampage just got a whole lot more interesting. Shout out to Cami Nogueira who took the BFGoodrich Tires Toughness Award for turning up to ride despite breaking her nose the previous day. Props for having the guts to step out of such a historic event too.
