DMR Bikes Lacon Pedals Review

WOW. That colour! My first impressions were driven entirely by the magpie in me, the part of me that loves shiny new things. And shiny the DMR Lacon’s are!

Andreu Lacondeguy’s signature pedal is (he reckons) “big and gnarly, just how I like to ride my bike” and to be honest – he’s right. These pedals are huge.

With a 105x115mm area they’re probably some of the biggest pedals I’ve ever ridden. That’s not to say they’re weighty or fat though – at 400g a pair and 17mm deep they’re actually fairly svelte when you look from the side.

Big platform and big grip

With 11 pins per pedal and the ability to run them either way to tune the grip it did take a bit of getting used to. I eventually swapped a couple of the longer ones around to limit the sheer grip available and hopefully save my shins one day.

Whilst the large platform was initially designed to make landing huge jumps easier, it also makes life easier if you’ve got big feet for normal riding – My size 12’s fit nicely on the pedal and don’t end up hanging over the edge.

You may find that if you have smaller feet (size 9 or below) the Lacons will feel a bit like they’re swallowing your feet – so have a blast on a pair before you buy to get a feel for them.

Maintenance

The pedal has a DU bush and a cartridge bearing inside. In the couple of months I’ve been riding them they’ve required zero maintenance and all the parts are serviceable so no worries there. The 6061 alu body and a 4130 cro-mo steel axle, despite being battered into a few rocks are still looking solid and if Andreu can land huge canyon gaps on them, I’m feeling pretty safe so far.

The finish

And finally – that finish! The oil slick colours have attracted equal amounts of awe and disgust on the trails so it’s down to your opinion. The Brendog and the standard Vault pedals are available in more sensible finishes, but who wants that?!

The word:

The Lacon represents the top end of DMR’s pedal range and is priced at a top end £124.99. I’m glad DMR have gone large on the pedal body, it makes for a solid, dependable platform and if you like the colour, these are the ones for you! We’d recommend these in particular for riders with plus sized feet.
