Teaching an old dog new tricks – The Funn Hover pedal

We love products that challenge the norm here at Wideopenmag – products that dare to do something that little bit different or try a new take on an old design. Where would be without innovation and experimentation right?

Funn have done something interesting with their new Hover pedal – they’ve given it ‘float’.

Flat pedals are a pretty uncomplicated concept. You pop your foot on the platform, you ride down the hill and you use a combination of grippy pins, sticky shoes and technique to stay attached to your steed. Clipless pedals however offer ‘float’. That means that your foot stays clipped in to the pedal but has a few degrees of movement. This lets your feet move around on the pedal as you dance through the rough stuff and slither through the turns without losing your footing.

The Funn Hover claims to bring the concept of float to a flat pedal – with 16degrees (8 forward and 6 backwards) of movement in the axle of the pedal. The axle of the Hover is sprung loaded so that the pedal can twist as you ride a turn, moving with your footing and copying the feeling you’d get on a clipless pedal. Funn say that it’s maybe more suited to experienced riders so we’ll be interested to see how well they’re adopted.

Whether the Hover is a roaring success or goes down as another “nice try” project, we’re excited to have a ride and report back how they feel. Without innovation, crazy ideas and new concepts we’re never going to come up with the next best thing now are we?

The Funn Hover pedal features a full 6061cnc body, weight is 450g a pair and they sport full cartridge bearings. The platform dimensions are W98mm x L100mm x H 13.9mm.
