Introducing the new Nukeproof Horizon pedal

Fresh out this week is the brand new Nukeproof Horizon CS and CL clipless pedals.

Here’s our take on Nukeproof’s entry into clipping-in.

Don’t worry, Sam Hill aint clipping in…

Nukeproof have, to date, done a fine job of creating grippy, top quality flat pedals. Their link to flat-pedal-god Sam Hill probably didn’t hurt.  New for 2017 though, Nukeproof have launched two brand new clip-in pedals – the Nukeproof Horizon CS and CL pedals.

Whilst these aren’t designed for Sam (he’s got no plans to run clips any time soon) he was a big influence in the design. The new Horizon clip-in used the Horizon Pro Sam Hill edition as the basis for its pedal body, building a Shimano-style clip-in mechanism into the platform. Where Sam’s influence ended, Matti Lehikoinen and Mike Jones took over – testing and refining the design as clip-in racers.

Bigger, grippier, gnarlier

The Horizon CS is the bigger, grippier, gnarlier of the two designs. It’s designed for downhill and ‘gravity’ riders. It’s the pedal of the two that way more obviously resembles the original Horizon Pro flat-pedal.

The Horizon SL is a bit more ‘trail’ with a smaller cage, a bit less grip and a bit less weight. if you’re riding trail centres and singletrack rather than big, rough downhill and enduro tracks you’ll maybe want this one.

Both pedals share some common features. First up, both feature a combo of sealed cartridge bearings and DU bushes to keep the cack out and keep them spinning for longer.

Both also sport a cold-forged 6061 aluminium body and have been designed  – Nukeproof say – “with high strength Vs weight characteristics due to its optimised grain structure. This is not achievable with more common cast or machined pedal chassis.”

The flat-pedal-feel

Both have also been designed – we’re told – to fit all the weird combinations of foot size and shoe type that you guys can run. They’ve designed the platforms so that they’ll work as well with a size 12 Five Ten as they will with a size 6 Giro.

They’ve been designed to give a flat-pedal feel to a clipped pedal and built to provide maximum contact area for your grippy soles whilst avoided any of those annoying issues with engagement you get elsewhere.

“The sloping toe edge prevents obstruction during engagement, reduces weight and protects the bindings and mechanism from strikes with rocks and obstacles.”

The mechanism for clipping-in deserves a mention. Nukeproof have designed it so that you can clip-in backwards, forwards and from above. That means zero hassle stamping your foot into the pedal on a muddy hillside mid race-stage. There will be two Nukeproof-designed cleats, with +4 and +8 degrees of float respectively.
