You may well know that Vero Sandler is pretty handy on a bicycle, but she’s also a dab hand at drawing too and has just had her first tees made.
Inspired by fellow riders like Micayla Gatto and other artists on Instagram, Vero Sandler picked up a pen and has since started a collaboration with Banana Industries to create tee shirts sporting her designs.
We caught up with Vero to see what it’s all about.
So Vero, you seem to be pretty into your art at the moment. Where did that come from?
Yeah, I’m loving it! I’ve always admired artists, especially ones who are into action sports and draw ‘outdoorsie’ type stuff. Last year I started following a few artists on Instagram all who had similar styles of illustration; little black and white line art sketches inspiring people to get outside and amongst nature and I thought I’d give it a go.
I started off copying a few of their drawings to see if I could even do it, and then all sorts of ideas started flowing in my head and I started creating my own sketches and it all progressed from there. Drawing is one of my main hobbies now!

What inspires you to be creative?
I think I’ve always had a creative side; I started playing music from a young age and went to a very hands-on, creative school where making things (eg, woodwork, sewing or painting) was just as important as academic success. These days there are so many inspiring people or ideas that pop into my head that keeps me on a constant hype to draw a new illustration whenever I have the time.
What inspired your particular style of illustration?
It was mainly those artists on Instagram I mentioned before, they seem to have a way of drawing really simple illustrations which still portray a big message or are still really interesting to look at repeatedly, and that’s what I wanted to do with my art. Simple yet effective is the best!

What does art, drawing and design mean to you?
I’m still quite new to it all but at the moment its just something I really enjoy doing whenever I can and its also such a relaxing thing to do!
What made you push on and create some teeshirts?
It actually just came up in conversation with the Banana boys one day… They had seen my drawings on social media and mentioned that they were thinking about starting a girls brand within Banana Industries and asked if I’d like to do some designs for them. I was so stoked, as having some of my illustrations printed on clothing is the dream!
There is no better brand to work with. Those boys have put so much work into making everything environmentally friendly and are all about getting outside amongst nature which is exactly what I’m about too. Even the patches on their beanies are eco friendly!
What other artists or illustrators inspire you?
Aside from all the rad art I see on social media, people like Micayla Gatto are a massive inspiration. Her art is incredible and shes also a massive outdoor advocate who’s having a laugh which I think life is all about!
Basically anyone who draws and likes to get amongst nature inspires, its always sick to see peoples different styles no matter how experienced they are. All art is good art I reckon!
