I’ll be the first to admit that I am terrible at keeping hydrated while riding my bike. Usually I only notice when my head starts to thump and guzzling a bottle-load makes me feel amazing. While this would make me pretty bad at testing energy tablets, if they’re good, what I do drink will be noticed even more acutely.
So, loading the recommended tablet (1 per 250ml) into your bottle and you’ll notice it doesn’t have the same level of effervescence of other brands, so you do need throw them in a few minutes before you head out the door.
The flavour of the tablet, being natural and from the ingredients rather than flavouring, means that I generally opted to add an extra half tab per bottle to get the taste. Off Grid’s Tom Jackson has since said that the guidelines are now for users to add more to taste.
Since the tabs arrived with me, I’ve made a point of leaving the tube in my riding pack for top ups, and even with my minimal liquid consumption, they’ve been helping to stave off hamstring cramp, which is the usual indicator that I’ve been out a while or not fuelled myself properly.
When fuelled and watered properly, the tabs allow me to go longer, when I’ve done my usual, they definitely mean I can concentrate on my riding.
While they may be more expensive than the offerings from High5, SiS and the rest, they’ll keep you going just as long, but the real bonus there’s a marked reduction in the fizzy belly you get after a day of hammering the more mainstream energy tablets.
