After missing out in 2020, Fort William will host its nineteenth World-level event on the weekend of 22nd-23rd May 2021.
World Cup racing will return to the Scottish Highlands in late May 2021 for its nineteenth event since Chris Kovarik won by the largest margin to date. What will the next year’s event throw up?
Following Reece Wilson’s amazing Downhill World Champion title win on Sunday, the UCI has confirmed the 2021 Mountain Bike World Cup calendar, including a 19th event at Fort William in the Scottish Highlands, on 22-23 May, 2021.
The action-packed weekend event is set to return next year following the cancellation of the 2020 Fort William event for the first time since 2002.
Adding to the two years of anticipation and pent-up excitement will be the chance to see Reece Wilson as the reigning World Champion at his home World Cup. All the passionate fans and the world’s top riders will be more than ready to experience the return of Fort William’s world-beating downhill action in May next year.
The UCI Mercedes Benz Mountain Bike World Cup is always a key highlight of Scotland’s sporting calendar. As events across the globe learn to adapt to Covid-19 impacts, the event organisers are committed to working with the UCI and the Scottish Government to put in place appropriate measures which will be in line with the guidance in place at the time.
Mike Jardine from organisers Rare Management, said: “After a year off we can’t wait to welcome the best fans cheering on the best riders, who will all be competing for a place on the Fort William World Cup podium.
”Reece Wilson’s win at the weekend was a huge boost for British mountain biking and the ultimate recognition of his talent. As reigning World Champion everyone will be raring to see him in front of his home crowd at Fort William next year.”
Paul Bush OBE, VisitScotland’s Director of Events, said: “The UCI Mountain Bike World Cup in Fort William is one of the must-see events on the Scottish sporting calendar, so it is great to have the dates for next year’s event confirmed after the cancellation of this year’s event. I’m sure fans will be especially eager for next year’s event after Reece Wilson’s win at the World Championships on the weekend.
“Scotland is the perfect stage for events and EventScotland looks forward to continuing to work with the organisers of the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup in Fort William as we build towards Glasgow and Scotland hosting the inaugural UCI Cycling World Championships in 2023.“
