The New Canyon Spectral 29 | Everything You Need to Know.

Taking their existing Spectral 275, Canyon have changed up almost everything when it came to approaching a redesign of their big-wheeled trail bike.

Fresh geometry, suspension, carbon layup and some new frame features mean the new Canyon Spectral 29 is a very different beast altogether.

Canyon are touting their almost all new Spectral 29 as the one bike to rule them all. And with 150mm travel, 29″ wheels, a lighter frame than the outgoing model and revised kinematics and geometry, it’s certainly making a strong case for itself. Should you opt for a Fox-equipped Spectral, you’ll get a 160mm fork, while Rockshox units balance the suspension at 150mm front and rear.

A revised carbon layup sees the Spectral 29 frame come in lighter than the Spectral CF 275 frame by 222 grams, which is half a pound in British money, and 62 grams lighter than the Spectral CFR 275. These weight savings come even as the chainstays and reach have grown too, thanks mostly to the shift to a carbon rear end. The frame weighs in at 2,598 grams (5.72 pounds).

With a view to getting more out of your legs, the Spectral 29 has more anti-squat at the sag point and in the initial part of the travel, with the leverage curve becoming more progressive, aimed at improving control when things start getting rowdy.

The frame now comes with tips filtered down from Canyon Collective mechanics, like the replaceable threaded frame inserts and most of the pivot hardware can be accessed from the non-drive side of the frame. Double sealed bearings and internal cable guides are also aimed at giving you more time on the bike than on the spanners.

Depending on what brand of forks, and therefore the available travel, geometry on the Spectral 29 varies ever so slightly.

On the Medium Spectral 29, you get a 430mm seat tube, with a 460mm reach. A flip chip allows you to change the seat and head tube angles by half a degree. So if you are on Team Fox, you get a head angle of 64/64.5, with a seat tube at 76/76.5. On the Rockshox Forks, those numbers are 65/65.5 and 76.5/77 degrees respectively. Chainstays are fixed across the sizes at 437mm.
