Giro Launch the Montaro MIPS III Helmet.

Giro’s Montaro MIPS III is as the name suggests the third iteration of Giro’s aggressive trail helmet that is both smaller and offers more coverage than before.

Previous Giro Montaro models have been famed for their comfort but it seemed like MIPS was added as an afterthought, leading to sweaty heads. This all-new Montaro MIPS III aims to rectify that whilst also being at the forefront of trail helmet technology.

With the MIPS Evolve Core built into this new Giro Montaro MIPS III, the third gen Montaro manages to be more compact and offer more coverage. Giro’s tagline for this helmet is ‘Aggressive Trail Protection’. Hopefully it’s protection for aggressive trail riding and not aggressive protection for trails…

A polycarbonate shell houses an EPS liner with the MIPS Evolve Core inside that, all fairly standard for a modern trail helmet. In fact, there are visual similarities with one of our favourite helmets going the Fox Speedframe Pro, which is n bad thing as far as we’re concerned.

The Evolve Core MIPS liner claims to be thinner, lighter and more breathable, solving a lot of problems at once if the claim is true. With the MIPS liner no longer added after the fact, all the other elements of the helmet have bee designed with it in mind too, leading to a much neater helmet overall.

RocLoc Trail manages the fit and is micro-adjustable. The Trail variant uses a much larger dial and is therefore far handier than the racey options on the lighter lids in the range. The Ionic+ liner is proven, thin, comfy and doesn’t smell like hot cheese after long summer days.

A two position visor compliments two, yes two, glasses holders. One at the front and one at the back. No, you’re not likely to need both on a ride, but it’s all personal preference anyway, right? Everything is kept in place by a Fidlock magnetic buckle which is the de-facto pricey helmet closure these days.

The ebike certification, tested at 28mph, gives the Montaro MIPS III that extra bit of credibility for its safety. Nobody downgrades their helmet for less safety, so it’s good to see trail lids getting put through the ringer with more stringent testing in this way.
