Team Wideopen’s Kelan Grant wins Red Bull Fox Hunt

Great news for a Monday morning from our lad, Kelan Grant!

Kelan just won the 2017 Red Bull Fox Hunt in Northern Ireland.

Fox Hunt is a Red Bull event that takes place at Rostrever in Northern Ireland. 450 riders (the hounds) mass-start from the top of the hill and have to race 3 riders (the foxes) to the bottom.

It’s the sixth time the race has been held and this year’s foxes were Gee Atherton, Loic Bruni and three times Fox Hunt winner Colin Ross.

Team Wideopen’s Kelan Grant took the win. As you’d expect, the home fans were pretty stoked.

The track is 5.6km long and is a a proper all-rounder with big jumps up top and tight, techy woods down the bottom.

Kelan qualified 2nd on the Saturday. Each of the riders gets a timed run down the track to decide their position in the mass start.

On Sunday, the main race sees everyone head off from the start line en-mass. The Foxes set off alongside the main pack and have to overtake as many of them as they can to get to the finish line first.

Up on the start line.

Gee Atherton in the mix, trying to fight his way out front.

Kelan took it steady off the start. He reckons that the trick isn’t to go for the holeshot but to hang back and pick your lines, pick your moment and then just go for it.

He broke away from the main pack early and cracked on for the finish, spending most of the race on his own, out in the lead. The tactics worked and Kelan crossed the line ahead of the pack of hounds and the three foxes, taking the win.

As you’d expect, the after party went on late and work this morning was a bit of a struggle. Another well deserved hangover and well deserved victory Mr Grant, great work!
