Tested : Pete’s Royal Racing Storm Waterproof Trousers Review.

Royal Racing’s Storm Waterproof Trousers are designed to deal with the very worst that the British Isles weather can muster.

Much like the Matrix waterproof jacket tested back in June, the Storm waterproof trousers from Royal Racing are out to keep you dry regardless of the deluge.

Apart from the reflective logos, the Royal Racing Storm trousers are rather unassuming. They feel light in the hand but the material feels tough, designed to deal with some bad weather and worse treatment.

The waterproof, breathable, 4-way stretch fabric is fully taped at the seams, and have enough room to run knee pads underneath. A YKK zip and ratchet closure ensure you don’t bare your ass at anyone too. The two pockets are also waterproof.

Along with the other Royal Racing kit I had to test, I opted for the XSmall but I couldn’t for the life of me get these over my legs. Length-wise, the XSmall were spot on, but the Smalls would actually go up to my waist, so I’d have to make do. Best try these on before you buy.

Out on the trail, the Storm trousers are comfy enough, but you do very quickly get the feeling that they need to be tested by the elements to not be too sweaty. Unless you’re into single figures and dealing with a fair bit of rain, these will leave your thighs and knees sweaty pretty quickly.

That said, take them out into the storm force hoolie and they will see you right. The worse the weather gets, the better the Storm pants perform. I have spent long days up big mountains in the pouring rain with these over the top of other trousers to keep the liquid off and they didn’t skip a beat.

What do we think?

They’re not cheap but then if you get the fit right, they really will see you through a blizzard with some heat in your legs. Pair them up with the Matrix jacket for some serious bad weather fun.

We love:

  • Mad weather proof
  • Understated design
  • Durability
  • Solid construction

Could do better:

  • Sizing is a bit funny
