A proper look at the new Nukeproof Horizon wheelset

For 2018 Nukeproof have pressed reset on their wheels and started from scratch.

With Team Wideopenmag running the Horizon wheelsets we thought it was time for a proper guided tour of the new hoops.

On the horizon

Nukeproof have long made their own wheels, many of which we’ve ridden and raced here at Team Wideopenmag. They’ve typically made a decent and affordable set of hoops that we’ve hurtled down tracks like Fort William with plenty of success.

For 2018, Nukeproof have pressed ‘reset’. They’ve aimed to make a brand new, high performance wheelset that isn’t just something to hang off their complete bikes. They’ve set out to make a wheel set that’ll perform well enough and look good enough that you’d happily run it on any bike.

Enduro to Downhill

The Nukeproof Horizon rims are set up for 28 spokes with a 29mm internal width and to take tyres up to 2.8″.

Horizon wheels are going to be, we reckon, great for everything beyond lightweight trail riding. They’re nice and wide and can take large, tough tyres meaning you should have no problem hammering a big, nasty downhill race or shredding your local natural trails.

The 29mm internal rim width is a good number in our book. It’s on par with the Stans NoTubes Arch Mk3 and in our experience is a good width for rough, technical ground and creates a good tyre profile without any weird effects.

Team Wideopenmag are going to be running these on their Nukeproof Pulse downhill bikes and Nukeproof Mega enduro bikes at the Enduro World Series, British Downhill Series and heaps of other events.

Rims built with WTB

First up, let’s look at the new rims.

Nukeproof have teamed up with WTB to make a tubeless ready, 28 spoke rim with a very modern 29mm internal width that’s available in 27.5″ or 29″. The wide rim allows for loads of tyre options and you can run up to 2.8″ on the 27.5 or 2.6″ on the 29’er.

And a brand new hub

The hub is Nukeproof’s own and packs in some decent numbers.

Nukeproof say that “hubs are CNC machined for tight tolerances and perfect alignment with spokes, providing a strong and durable wheel build”. We haven’t laced up a pair of wheels with them yet but all of the pre-built complete wheel sets we’ve got run straight and true.

The rear hub is a 6 pawl design with 84 engagements. Those ‘pawls’ are what allows your hub to either freewheel in one direction or engage in the other as you pedal. Generally, the more pawls the better and the more points of engagement, the better your hubs feels.

The Nukeproof Horizon hubs are available in various sizes:
