Nevis range regrades and renames Red Giant to honour Joe Barnes

The Nevis Range team have renamed their infamous red graded black trail in honour of Dudes of Hazard Chief, Joe Barnes.

The Red Giant trail was built back in 2009 by the Nevis Range team, intended as a less gnarly alternative to the World Cup track. It’s accessed from the Gondola, it’s 5.5km long and it drops 643m.

The trail combines board walk sections, rock gardens and technical single track to create a fun, challenging ride that’s definitely a bit more suited to advanced riders. Despite the red rating, riders have always considered it to be a reasonably challenging ride and considered it to be a bit more ‘black’ than red.

The Nevis Range team have now officially regraded the trail to black to fit more in line with the challenge it promises riders.

They’ve also now renamed it the ‘Top Chief’ in honour of Fort William local legend and Dudes of Hazard top chief, Joe Barnes.

It’s the second feature on the hill devoted to the Dudes of Hazard… if anyone can guess the other one, let us know in the comments!
