First Look: Nukeproof’s new Nirvana Jersey

The Nukeproof Nirvana jersey is the brand new, top-of-their-range offering from the Irish bike brand.

Sure, Nukeproof can make an EWS winning enduro bike… but can they cut it in the bike-wear game?

Unlike yesterday’s Troy Lee review this one is definitely a proper, in-your-face mountain bike jersey.

It packs in some really up-to-date styling and a heap of technical features to make a jersey that stands up nicely against the dedicated clothing brands. And at £70 it’s going to have to, stacking up in price with the well-established favourites like Fox, Alpinestars and Troy Lee.

The jersey is made of Cordura fabric which feels tough and lightweight with a slight stretch. It feels soft against the skin and the light material and baggy fit give it a comfortable, airy feel. You’d wear this happily on all but the hottest British summer’s day, in the Spring and Autumn with a base layer underneath or under a jacket in the winter.

Our size large sample felt decently spacious compared to other brands in a similar size. If you prefer your kit skinny-fit you might want to order a couple of sizes to try which fits best. Our 5ft10 and slightly tubby test-pilot was left with a bit of space for body armour underneath and a little bit of extra room to grow into the sleeves.

At £70 you’d really expect a jersey to pack in some impressive features… and we were reassured to find plenty of details scattered throughout the Nirvana.

First up, the neck, cuffs and hem are seam welded, meaning that they’re attached by heat rather than stitching. The idea is to reduce bits that can chaff, rub and irritate the skin.

The rear panel of the jersey is a breathable, moisture wicking mesh material that should help keep you sweat free. The material is also said to be anti-bacterial to keep it smelling sweet on day three of your riding holiday.

The front panel is a slightly sturdier material which should let in less air to keep you warmer on those chilly descents from the trig point.

The Nukeproof Nirvana Jersey’s sleeves are a tougher, thicker material than the rest of the jersey and are designed to ward off tears and scratches from the shrubbery.

They’ve got ventilation holes on the inside-elbow and rip-stop patches on the outside for when you take a dive. There’s also non-slip details on the shoulders to keep your hydration pack in place.

If you’re not into the black and camo colours you can see here there are two other options available. There’s a blue and orange version that has a classic race jersey style and a much more casual looking ‘Maroon Grunge’ that we reckon will be a favourite for many.

What do we think?

So Nukeproof can make a bike that’ll win an Enduro World Series championship title, but can they cut it in the garments game?

We can’t vouch for durability just yet but they’ve certainly made an impressive jersey that’s packed with technical features, looks great and feels equally great to wear.

Nothing about the Nirvana jersey says that the new collection has been bolted-on to the Nukeproof catalogue as an after-thought, it’s a proper clothing line up that stands up on its own right regardless of bikes.

We’ll put some more miles into the Nirvana jersey and let you know what’s what!
